UX audit

Find the friction before investing in more features

UX/UI app design is the process of understanding what people need, shaping clear journeys and turning them into interfaces that are useful, usable and ready to build.

A UX audit gives you a practical starting point when an existing website, app or portal feels confusing, underperforms or has grown inconsistent. We review key screens and journeys, identify usability and accessibility risks, and prioritise improvements by likely user and business value.

You receive clear findings and recommended next steps, rather than a list of vague design opinions. If the product is still at idea stage, our Quickstart App Planning service can combine early wireframing with broader project planning.

  • Review priority journeys, navigation and interface patterns
  • Identify usability, consistency and accessibility issues
  • Separate quick improvements from deeper product changes
  • Turn findings into a prioritised design backlog

UX and interface design services matched to your product

Choose a focused piece of work or combine these capabilities into an end-to-end design engagement. We adapt the depth of research and documentation to the decisions your team needs to make.

UX audits

Structured reviews of existing journeys, screens and patterns, with prioritised recommendations your team can act on.

User research

Interviews, workshops and evidence gathering to understand user goals, context, pain points and language.

User journeys

Mapped flows that show how different users complete important tasks, including decision points and failure paths.

Wireframes

Low-fidelity screen structures that make content, hierarchy and interaction choices easy to discuss early.

Clickable prototypes

Testable flows that help stakeholders and users experience the proposed product before development begins.

Interface design

Polished, responsive UI for web and mobile, shaped around real content, platform conventions and product goals.

Accessible design

Inclusive patterns, clear hierarchy, readable contrast and interaction guidance considered throughout the design work.

Design systems

Reusable components, states and usage guidance that help teams build consistently and extend the product later.

Turn evidence into a product people can understand

Good design makes decisions visible early. We move from user needs and journey logic into testable screens, then refine the interface with your feedback.

Research and user journeys

We establish who the product serves, what each user is trying to achieve and where the current experience creates effort or uncertainty. Research can include stakeholder workshops, user interviews, analytics or support themes, depending on what evidence is available.

We then map the important journeys, including alternative routes, permissions, content needs and edge cases. This gives product owners, designers and developers a shared picture of the problem before detailed screens are produced.

Wireframes, prototypes and interface design

Wireframes let the team challenge structure and flow while changes are still quick. Clickable prototypes make important interactions tangible and can support stakeholder reviews or user testing.

Once the flow is sound, we develop the visual interface: layout, typography, colour, components, states and responsive behaviour. The aim is a coherent experience that fits your brand and is practical to implement.

How an app design engagement works

A collaborative design process

The exact activities depend on what you already know and what decision comes next. We keep the work visible, review it with the right people and document decisions so momentum carries into delivery.

  1. Frame the problem

Agree the business outcome, priority users, constraints, success signals and the questions the design work must answer.

  2. Gather evidence

Review the current product and available data, then use focused research or workshops to close important knowledge gaps.

  3. Map the experience

Define user journeys, information structure, key states and content needs before investing in detailed screens.

  4. Prototype and test

Create wireframes and clickable prototypes, gather feedback, and improve the flow while changes remain efficient.

  5. Refine and hand over

Produce the interface, responsive behaviour, components, states and implementation notes needed for a confident build.

Design-system handover

Give developers clear, reusable design decisions

A polished screen is only part of a useful handover. We organise components, variants, responsive rules and interaction states so developers can see how the product should behave, not just how one ideal screen should look.

Where appropriate, the handover can include component libraries, annotated journeys, prototype links, content guidance and review sessions with the delivery team. That shared language helps reduce avoidable interpretation and supports consistent future releases.

The intended outcomes are clearer scope, earlier validation, fewer expensive surprises during development and a product experience that is easier to extend. If you need design and development together, talk to our team about a joined-up engagement.

  • Reusable components and variants
  • Desktop, tablet and mobile behaviour
  • Empty, loading, error and success states
  • Interaction notes and prototype references
  • Developer walkthrough and design review

What Our Clients Say

  • Scorchsoft helped us take our idea for an app and make it a reality. Everything from the planning meeting to decide what we really needed to the project management and execution was great. It was delivered on time - early in fact - and on budget. Highly recommend.

  • We're really pleased with the work Scorchsoft has done in developing our web portal! They have been accurate with timelines and budget, delivering a solid product that allows us to monitor and manage patients remotely while they use our novel medical device at-home. The "plan - design - build" approach has worked well and saved us time in the long-run by catching requirements and issues early.

  • I'm really pleased with how my app came out, it was exactly what I was looking for. The team at Scorchsoft are great at what they do and made the whole process as simple and easy as possible. Being someone who is not very tech savvy the set up and back end operations were done in a great easy to use manner even for myself which makes using my app stress free. Thanks to all the team!

  • The new Flourish Education website has already removed a lot of manual processes, freeing up both schools, candidates and internal employees time. We are delighted with the look and feel which is clean, professional and more engaging. We are also pleased with the decision to have an HD video background on the homepage, and building immediate trust with our clients by giving them a taste of what it looks like in the Flourish Education offices.

  • I can't believe how quickly we started to see results with this project. Scorchsoft provided us with graphic-designed mockups of how the app would look once built, and we were able to sell the product for use by our first customer before the product was finished. Since launching in March, we have secured a major television network as a client who now uses Image Approvals to manage the talent approval process for their productions.

UX/UI and app design FAQs

Practical answers about scope, research, deliverables, accessibility and working with development teams.

A typical engagement can include discovery, a UX audit, user research, user journeys, information architecture, wireframes, clickable prototypes, interface design, responsive states and a design-system handover. The exact mix depends on whether you are improving a live product, planning a new one or preparing a defined feature for development.

Yes. We can review priority journeys and screens, look for usability, consistency and accessibility issues, and turn the findings into a prioritised set of recommendations. The audit can stand alone or become the first stage of a wider redesign.

Existing customer knowledge is valuable, but it can still contain assumptions. We agree a proportionate research approach rather than adding research for its own sake. That might mean a few targeted interviews, a stakeholder workshop, analytics review or testing one high-risk journey.

A wireframe describes the structure and hierarchy of a screen without committing to final visual styling. A prototype connects screens into an interactive flow, so people can experience important tasks and give feedback before development. A prototype may use simple wireframes or polished interface designs.

Yes. We design responsive web products and mobile app experiences, taking account of platform conventions, screen sizes and shared product behaviour. Where one product spans several platforms, we define what should stay consistent and where native patterns should differ.

We consider inclusive design throughout the work, including hierarchy, contrast, focus, interaction patterns, readable content and common assistive-technology needs. Accessibility compliance depends on the final implementation, content, testing and ongoing maintenance, so design work alone cannot guarantee certification or compliance.

It depends on the number of user types and journeys, the quality of existing research, the fidelity needed and how quickly stakeholders can review work. A focused audit or prototype is smaller than a full product design. Share what you need to decide or build, and we will recommend a proportionate scope before work starts.
