How we encrypt your data
Different data needs different protection. These are the four kinds of encryption we build into apps, portals and integrations.
Encryption in transit with HTTPS
When your data is on the move, it's known as 'in transit'. This means it's moving networks on a single device or between different computer systems. This data is especially vulnerable to attacks as it moves. To protect it, we use HTTPS encryption which stops potential hackers from seeing the data. With our help, you can be sure your files are safe no matter where they are.
Encryption at rest (volume encryption)
If you have stored data that you're not transferring, your data is at rest. You've likely got the information stored on your laptop, an external hard drive, or a flash drive. Even though it might seem safe, this data is at risk of hackers. To protect your data, we use volume encryption. We can encrypt sets of data — such as information in a folder or file — so that unauthorised users can't read it.
One-way encryption (e.g. passwords with a per-user salt)
Some data you never want to share. This is when we use one-way encryption which scrambles your data irreversibly. We often use it for data like passwords, and we add a salt to keep them extra secure. This salt is an extra bit of data that doesn't match the pattern we use to scramble the rest of your password. It stops hacks known as rainbow table attacks, where hackers solve the pattern and can decrypt the words without a key. With this extra layer, even the most experienced hackers could never steal your data.
Two-way encryption (for retrievable data with a key)
For data you want to retrieve, we use two-way encryption. We scramble your data just as we would for one-way encryption, but we also provide a key to decrypt it. When authorised users activate the key, they can see the data. It's incredibly secure and makes it difficult for anyone unauthorised to hack into your systems. If you want to share data, never send it without two-way encryption.

Encryption is not an end in itself. It is how we keep sensitive data private, keep attackers out of your traffic, limit the damage of a breach and get you certified.

Prevent man-in-the-middle attacks
Man-in-the-middle attacks are a common form of data breaches. They occur when a hacker manages to access your data and intercept communications between you and your recipient. You might not even know they're there or that they're unauthorised. It's a scary idea but one that we can protect you from. Our encryption can keep these hackers out, making sure they never get past your server walls and stay away from your data.
Reduce the impact of a worst-case-scenario data breach
For every business handling sensitive data, a security breach is a very real threat. We can help you work out the worst-case-scenario for a breach. By preparing, we can start protecting your data in the right way and put measures in place to keep your business safe. We can also monitor your data for any potential holes in security and patch them up quickly. By looking ahead, we can stop your business from becoming a target.
Ensure compliance (such as Cyber Essentials)
When we secure your data, we can make sure it reaches the compliance of Cyber Essentials (or your local equivalent). This is a government-backed scheme that protects you against common data threats. By meeting their requirements, we can earn you a Cyber Essentials certification. This gives you the peace of mind that you're protected and lets your users know that you take data security seriously.
