Custom software development means designing and building an application for one organisation, rather than licensing something generic and bending your processes to fit it. UK buyers also call it bespoke software development; the two terms describe the same thing, and this page uses both.
Most of what we build takes one of a few recognisable shapes. A web application or customer portal that replaces a shared inbox and a spreadsheet. An internal operations system that carries a process from first enquiry to invoice. An integration layer that gets two systems you already pay for talking to each other. Or a mobile app that takes a process out of the office and into the field.
We are an in-house team working from the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Nothing is offshored, and the people who scope your project are the people who build it.
What we build
Nearly every bespoke project we take on starts in the same place: a process that currently lives in spreadsheets, email threads and one member of staff's head. The job is to move it into software that fits the process rather than the other way round.
We work across web, desktop and mobile, and the platform usually falls out of where the work happens rather than any preference of ours. Web covers most business software — one deployment, one set of data to back up, and everyone on the current version the moment it ships. Mobile earns its place when people are away from a desk and need to read or update central records on site. Desktop still makes sense for heavy local processing or when a machine has to keep working offline.

When bespoke beats off-the-shelf — and when it does not
Custom software costs more to start and it is yours to maintain afterwards. That trade is worth making less often than a development agency's website usually implies, so here is where we think each side genuinely wins.
Buy off-the-shelf when…
- The process is genuinely standard — payroll, accounting, email, helpdesk, e-commerce.
- A mature product already covers most of what you need and you can live with the remainder.
- You need it working next week rather than next quarter.
- The budget makes a subscription obviously cheaper than a build, and will stay that way.
- Your compliance and reporting requirements are common to your whole industry.
- Nobody internally will own the software once it launches.
Build custom when…
- The process is the advantage, and adopting a generic tool would mean giving it up.
- You pay for several products and still move data between them by hand.
- Per-seat licensing is growing faster than the value you get back from the product.
- The workaround — a spreadsheet, a shared inbox, one person who knows the steps — has become a risk.
- The software has to fit systems you already run, not the other way round.
- You want to own the code and the data, or licence what you build to your own customers.

Fitting into the systems you already run
Very little bespoke software is built on a clean sheet. There is usually an ERP, a finance package, a CRM, a warehouse system or a supplier feed that has to stay exactly where it is, and the new application has to work around it.
That is where most of the risk in a custom software project sits, so we look at it early: what the APIs actually support rather than what the brochure claims, how often data genuinely needs to move, what happens when the far end is unavailable, and which system owns the record when two of them disagree.
The work usually combines API and systems integration, cloud database design and single sign-on so staff keep using the login they already have. Hayley Group's Hub, further down this page, is a plain example: a middleware layer sitting between applications the business had already invested in.

Security, maintainability and what happens in year three
The real cost of custom software is not the build; it is the decade afterwards. Software that stays cheap to change keeps paying back. Software nobody dares touch quietly becomes the problem it was written to solve.
So we build with the third year in mind: a conventional stack your next developer will recognise, documented code, environments that can be rebuilt from scratch, and a release process that does not depend on one person being available. Where records are sensitive we apply data encryption, and where the risk or a client's due diligence calls for it we arrange penetration testing.
Ownership and licensing are agreed before work begins, so there is never an argument later about whose code it is.

Ways to start a custom software project
There is more than one sensible way to begin, and the right one depends on how well defined the idea already is.
If the requirement is clear and you want to see something working quickly, Velocity Sprints get most projects to a usable MVP within two to eight weeks, typically across two to four sprints, with only one sprint committed at a time. If your organisation needs a fixed price against a fixed scope — often the case where procurement is involved — we also run waterfall project delivery.
Earlier than that, an idea validation package or prototype planning will give you a specification, wireframes and an itemised cost breakdown, so you can judge the return before committing to a build.
If you already have a system and it has gone wrong, that is a different conversation: we take on project rescue work and code audits on software somebody else wrote.

Custom software development questions
The questions we are asked most often before a bespoke software project starts.
There is no honest single figure, because the cost follows the scope: how many user roles and screens there are, how many other systems it has to talk to, how much existing data must be migrated, and how strict the security and compliance requirements are. A focused internal tool is a very different number from a multi-tenant SaaS platform. We publish the drivers in detail on our app development cost guide, and we will give you an itemised estimate before you commit to anything.
Using our Velocity Sprints approach, most projects aim to launch a functional, usable MVP within two to eight weeks, typically spanning two to four sprints. Larger systems keep going in sprints after that, releasing as they go rather than disappearing for six months. Fixed-scope waterfall projects run to a schedule agreed up front instead.
You do, under terms agreed before work begins. Ownership and licensing are settled at the start of the engagement rather than negotiated at the end, and you receive the source code along with the documentation needed to run it. Nothing we build is locked to us.
That is expected, and the sprint model is designed for it. Only one sprint is committed at a time, so the scope of the next one is agreed with what you have learned from the last. Changes are re-prioritised into upcoming sprints rather than treated as a contractual argument.
No, and we will say so. If a mature product already covers the process and you can adapt to how it works, buying is usually faster and cheaper over the life of the system. Bespoke software earns its cost when the process is genuinely yours, when licensing is scaling badly, or when the systems you already run have to be joined up. The comparison section above sets out both sides.
Yes — most of our projects have to. We integrate with ERP, CRM, finance, warehouse and supplier systems through their APIs, and we can add a middleware layer where several applications need to share data and a single login. We assess what each integration realistically supports during scoping, before it becomes a delivery risk.
Most clients keep us involved after launch for changes, new features and routine updates to the underlying platform. If you would rather run the system in-house or move it to another team, the code, the documentation and the deployment process are yours to take. We build on conventional, well-known technologies specifically so that you are not dependent on us.

You keep everything built to that point, including the code and the documentation, because the work is released in usable increments rather than held back until the end.
