What education software actually has to get right
Education organisations rarely have a software problem in isolation. There is a timetable, a safeguarding policy, an existing MIS, a mix of school-owned and borrowed devices, and a September deadline that does not move. Most of the difficulty in an education project sits in those constraints rather than in the feature list, and most of the cost overruns come from discovering them late.
These are the patterns that come up on almost every education brief we are asked to quote for:
- Four audiences, one system. A student, a teacher, a parent and an administrator need the same platform to behave like four different products. Getting the permission model right at the start is far cheaper than retrofitting it, which is most of what portal development really involves.
- Content that has to survive the classroom. Interactive lessons, video and assessments need to load on the hardware a school actually owns, over the connection it actually has. We built the SCERT reasoning test for tablets used in schools with limited connectivity for precisely that reason.
- Data about children. When the end users are minors, access control, data separation and encryption at rest and in transit stop being extras and become the design. We build to the specification your data protection officer signs off, and we will happily be reviewed by penetration testing — we do not make compliance claims on your behalf.
- The MIS you already pay for. Nobody wants a second place to keep the register. Most projects need integration with existing systems — an MIS, a CRM, a finance package — rather than a replacement for them.
- Sign-in a teacher will tolerate. Thirty pupils, one lesson, no time for password resets. Single sign-on against existing Google or Microsoft school accounts is often the difference between a platform being used and being quietly abandoned.
- Budgets that follow the academic year. Funding arrives on a term calendar, which tends to favour a smaller first release that proves itself in one department before it is rolled out. Our rapid MVP approach is built around that shape of budget.
Software we build, and software we run
We also run our own education-adjacent product. Control Standard (controlstandard.tools) includes an interactive e-learning course engine, chapter-by-chapter learning modules and a diagnostic scoring tool that turns a completed assessment into a scored report. Building and operating that has given us direct experience of the parts of a learning platform that are easy to underestimate: content authoring, progress state, scoring logic and the reporting that has to come out of the other end.

A tablet reasoning test for children in Less Economically Developed Countries, using animated non-verbal scenarios and language-specific voiceovers so reading ability does not skew the result.

A web platform that licences interactive e-learning courses to schools on a credit model, with separate admin, teacher and student accounts and self-service signup by school email suffix.

Control Standard Tools Platform
Our own product, and an e-learning platform in its own right: an interactive course and an assessment for every chapter of the standard, so a whole team can be taught it and tested on it rather than handed a document.
Where AI genuinely helps in education
AI in education is mostly assistive, and it should stay that way. Here is what we build, and what we tell clients to be careful of.

Marking support and content authoring
The honest version of AI in education is assistive. Language models are good at drafting feedback against a rubric, suggesting where an answer has missed a criterion, generating practice questions from an existing chapter, and rewriting a passage for a different reading age. They are not good at being accountable for a grade.
So we build these features with a person in the loop by default: the model proposes, a teacher or assessor reviews and decides, and the system records who approved what. That audit trail matters more in education than in almost any other sector, because a mark is a decision about a child's future. Search, summarising and adaptive practice
The other genuinely useful application is making a course library searchable by meaning rather than by filename. Retrieval-based search lets a teacher ask a question in plain English and get the three lesson resources that answer it, with citations back to the source material — a considerable improvement on a folder tree that only its creator understands.
From the same foundation you get short summaries of long resources, and adaptive practice that changes the next question based on what a learner has already got right. Both are ordinary software features with a model somewhere in the middle, and both are usually delivered as an AI integration into a platform you already run rather than as a new system.

Education software questions we get asked
Straight answers on cost, integration, data protection and what AI can and cannot be trusted with.
It depends almost entirely on how many user roles the platform has to serve and how content gets into it. A single-role course player is a much smaller build than a platform with admin, teacher, student and parent views, licensing and reporting. Usually, yes — if it has an API or a supported export, we can work with it. For Flourish Education we integrated their website with the Matchmaker recruitment system so vacancies loaded and updated automatically instead of being posted by hand. See system integration for how we approach that work.
With engineering rather than claims. That means role-based access control so a teacher cannot see another school's pupils, separation of personal data from assessment data, encryption in transit and at rest, and minimal collection in the first place. We build to the specification your data protection officer sets, and we do not assert certifications or compliance standards on your behalf.
It can draft feedback and flag where an answer appears to miss a rubric criterion, and that saves real time. We do not build systems that issue a final grade without a human decision, because a mark is an accountable judgement about a learner. In practice the model proposes, an assessor reviews, and the platform records who approved what.
All three, plus organisations that sell educational content to schools. The software problems overlap heavily — roles, content delivery, progress tracking and reporting — but the commercial model differs, and that is usually what shapes the build. Engage Lime, for example, needed a credit-based licensing model because their customers are schools rather than individual learners.
Yes, and it is a common reason education businesses commission a portal. The Engage Lime Interactive Learning Portal issues credits to schools, handles licence expiry and automatic redemption, and packages resources so they can be assigned to a school for a fixed period. Portal development covers the general pattern.
We start by looking at what format your content is actually in, because that decides the work. For Engage Lime we built an upload and delivery framework compatible with Adobe Animate, Vimeo and HTML5 so their team could publish content themselves. If you need a specific standard such as SCORM supported, we will scope it against your existing library rather than assume it drops in.
A focused first version — one audience, the core learning or assessment journey, the reporting that proves it works — is typically a matter of months rather than a year. We deliberately aim the first release at a single department or cohort so it can be funded within one academic year. Our delivery process sets out the stages.
