Regulated, physical, and measured by numbers you have to defend

This sector shares a shape. The work happens in the field, the reporting happens in an office, and somebody has to reconcile the two well enough to satisfy a regulator, an auditor or a customer's sustainability team. Meanwhile the quote that should take seconds still needs a site visit, and the figure that should be on a dashboard is assembled by hand each quarter.

The problems that come up again and again:

  • Quoting that cannot self-serve. Pricing depends on volume, site access, material type, distance and contract terms — which is exactly why it is usually a phone call. It does not have to be. We have built pricing engines that handle that complexity in seconds.
  • Numbers the customer will be audited on. Diversion rates, tonnage by stream, consumption, emissions. If the figure comes out of a spreadsheet, nobody can show how it was derived. If it comes out of a system with an audit trail, they can.
  • Field work that never quite reconciles. Collections, readings, inspections and job completions captured on paper or a generic form app, then rekeyed. The rekeying is where the errors live.
  • Sizing and specification tools for a sales network. Technical products that need calculating before they can be sold, by partners who are not engineers.

The common thread is that all four are data problems with a physical operation attached, and all four reward getting the data model right before anyone designs a screen.

The reporting is only as good as the plumbing

Ask an operator in this sector where their numbers come from and the honest answer is usually several places: a weighbridge system, a route scheduler, a finance package, a meter feed and a spreadsheet that reconciles the lot. That works until a customer asks for their diversion rate broken down by site and month, or a regulator asks how a figure was derived.

Fixing it is not glamorous and it is the highest-return work we do here: land the sources in one queryable store, agree the definitions once, then report from that rather than from whoever has the most recent export. Data lake development, AWS data engineering and our Lake On Rails product all exist for this.

AI then has something worth pointing at — anomaly detection on consumption or tonnage, forecasting demand, classifying inbound material from photographs, or letting an account manager ask a plain-English question instead of raising a report request. Applied before the data is joined up, it produces answers nobody can stand behind, which is worse than no answer at all.

Rapid results with Velocity Sprints

Pay for output, not hours.

Our Velocity Sprints process accelerates your app development. Each deliverable is scoped, tracked and quality-checked in Output Units — a unit of finished work rather than time spent. You see progress daily, and Escape Hatch Friday™ means you are never locked into a sprint that stopped making sense on Tuesday.

  1. Discovery & scoping

Focused workshops define the essential features of your MVP. You'll leave with clarity on scope, timeline and budget, without delays.

  2. Sprint-based builds

Our UK developers work in short, high-speed sprints to deliver working prototypes quickly. You'll see progress fast, with daily updates.

  3. Launch & validate — fast

Get your MVP live in weeks, not months. Test with real users, gather feedback and pivot rapidly, so your idea starts delivering value sooner.

What Our Clients Say

  • Scorchsoft helped us take our idea for an app and make it a reality. Everything from the planning meeting to decide what we really needed to the project management and execution was great. It was delivered on time - early in fact - and on budget. Highly recommend.

  • We're really pleased with the work Scorchsoft has done in developing our web portal! They have been accurate with timelines and budget, delivering a solid product that allows us to monitor and manage patients remotely while they use our novel medical device at-home. The "plan - design - build" approach has worked well and saved us time in the long-run by catching requirements and issues early.

  • I'm really pleased with how my app came out, it was exactly what I was looking for. The team at Scorchsoft are great at what they do and made the whole process as simple and easy as possible. Being someone who is not very tech savvy the set up and back end operations were done in a great easy to use manner even for myself which makes using my app stress free. Thanks to all the team!

  • The new Flourish Education website has already removed a lot of manual processes, freeing up both schools, candidates and internal employees time. We are delighted with the look and feel which is clean, professional and more engaging. We are also pleased with the decision to have an HD video background on the homepage, and building immediate trust with our clients by giving them a taste of what it looks like in the Flourish Education offices.

  • I can't believe how quickly we started to see results with this project. Scorchsoft provided us with graphic-designed mockups of how the app would look once built, and we were able to sell the product for use by our first customer before the product was finished. Since launching in March, we have secured a major television network as a client who now uses Image Approvals to manage the talent approval process for their productions.

Energy, utilities and waste software questions

What operators and environmental services firms ask us most often.

Usually, yes. Complex pricing is not the same as unquotable pricing — in most cases the rules exist, they are just held by experienced people rather than written down. The work is extracting those rules, agreeing which edge cases genuinely need a human, and building a quote engine that handles the rest instantly and routes the exceptions. Collect My Waste is a working example of exactly that.

It has to. Sites, depots, rural routes and plant rooms are where connectivity fails, and an app that assumes a connection fails with it. We build local-first: the job, the form and the evidence are held on the device and synced when a connection returns, with sensible handling of anything that changed while it was offline.

That is the design goal rather than a feature added later. It means recording where each figure came from, keeping the history when something is corrected, showing the calculation rather than just the result, and controlling who can change a definition. We build software to support your compliance obligations — we are developers rather than your regulatory adviser, so your team or advisers set the rules and we make the system implement and evidence them.

Where they expose a feed, yes. In this sector integrations are often less modern than in others — a nightly file drop, a database view, a serial output or an unglamorous middleware layer is common, and we are comfortable with all of them. The important step is confirming early what each system can actually give you, because that shapes the whole design.

Often you need less than you think. The ERP is usually fine at the finance and the master data, and poor at the operational edge — the field capture, the customer-facing portal, the sector-specific reporting. Building that edge and integrating it back is cheaper and less disruptive than replacing a working ERP or bending it into a shape it resists.

That is what we would recommend. One quote flow, one field form or one report, live in a few weeks through our Velocity Sprints process, running beside what you have. It proves the data joins up and gives you something real to react to before anyone signs off a platform budget.
